Meet… Clayton Larson! Clayton is an Application Engineer with Standard Electric. He works out of our Madison, WI location. Get to know Clayton!
What is your role and what do you specialize in?
My role is Application Engineer. In this role I enjoy supporting many of our control and automation products. I also provide support with applications in Hazardous Areas, and those for facility power distribution.
How did you become interested in Engineering?
I became interested in Engineering when a good friend suggested it to me in high school. His mom was an Industrial Engineer for GM and he knew I loved learning how things work, in addition to possessing skills in math and science studies to further pursue.
What attracted you to this industry?
A college internship for a manufacturing facility shifted my plans from electronic engineering to more emphasis on Power and Controls. Manufacturing was a natural fit.
What traits do you have that help you succeed in your role?
I love to solve problems. From gathering data and analyzing, to communicating and incorporating feedback, I find the process and the people key.
When you're working with clients, how do you help them identify and solve the problems that they're facing?
It’s important to be a good listener. Additionally, I ask a lot of questions to ensure we have the most accurate picture of issues from the start. With a firm foundation, we can together build a successful solution. Feedback is key throughout, which ties back to the listening.
What’s the most important thing you’ve learned while working for the Standard Electric family of companies?
Our relationship with our customers is critical, and a positive relationship is most important. We are here to serve them. Although the products and solutions we provide are cool, without good customer relationships they don’t mean much.
What kinds of things do you like to do outside of work?
I spend most of my time outside work with my beautiful wife and our family. We like to travel and enjoy new places. We love to watch (and sometimes even help coach) our children’s sports and activities. Additionally, I enjoy working on projects around our home, including some basic woodworking. Time permitting, some golfing!
What’s something most people don’t know about you?
I’m a classically trained pianist…just kidding, but I do wish I knew how to play. It’s something that’s on my bucket list.
