WHAT IS YOUR ROLE AT STANDARD ELECTRIC, AND WHAT DO YOU SPECIALIZE IN?
I am an Application Specialist with a focus on industrial automation products. I spend most of the time supporting ABB, IDEC, Red Lion, and WAGO product lines. This includes PLCs, HMIs, Drives, and other hardware.
HOW DID YOU BECOME INTERESTED IN ENGINEERING?
My uncle and cousins were very into computer programming and electronics. After they showed me how to make a device you could plug into a TV to allow you to override the TV (IE, only allowing one channel of your choice), I was hooked.
WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO THIS INDUSTRY?
With many of the technical products we provide, there is a need for people that can understand and assist in their deployment. My passion for solving problems made it a good fit.
WHAT TRAITS DO YOU HAVE THAT HELP YOU IN YOUR ROLE?
The traits that help me in my role here at Standard Electric are strong technical knowledge combined with prior practical experience and a desire to learn.
WHEN YOU'RE WORKING WITH CLIENTS, HOW DO YOU HELP THEM IDENTIFY AND SOLVE THE PROBLEMS THEY'RE FACING?
I typically start by asking about the challenges they are trying to solve. Then ask questions about that problem. For example, if a customer is trying to save money, I will ask about labor costs, downtime, challenges in hiring/training, and more. Based on their responses, that will guide other questions and the products I am looking to use. So if an OEM customer was trying to help their end customer cut costs on their coffee packaging lines, I might suggest using a collaborative robot to stack the product on the pallet and a centralized SCADA system to allow them to go from one operator per line to one operator per 4 lines.
WHAT'S THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU'VE LEARNED WHILE WORKING AT STANDARD ELECTRIC?
The company has a wide variety of solutions we can offer our customers with the knowledge to help the customer implement them.
WHAT KIND OF THINGS DO YOU LIKE TO DO OUTSIDE OF WORK?
I enjoy spending time with my family (kids sporting events, movies, travel, etc) and also video editing.
WHAT IS AN INTERESTING FACT ABOUT YOU THAT MIGHT SURPRISE CO-WORKERS OR FRIENDS?
I have worked at a chain of movie theaters during my summers in high school and college. This included indoor and drive-in locations. The more interesting part is all the strange things that happen at a drive-in.
