Meet… Jim Daly!

Jim Daly is the Warehouse Manager with Standard Electric Supply Co. He works out of Standard Electric’s Indianapolis, IN location. We asked Jim ten questions to get to know him better!

What interests or hobbies do you have outside of work?

As far as indoor projects, I’d say a few favorites would be cooking and maybe home improvement/updating. I’ve never really been much of a cook even though my Mother was a great chef. I’ve really honed my skills during the pandemic by watching cooking shows on PBS on the weekends. As far as home improvement stuff, I had a 100+ year old house when I used to live in Rockford. I always enjoyed remodeling and updating while maintaining the charm.  Outdoor activities would be biking and hiking.  An item on my bucket list is to walk the Camino De Santiago or Way of St James. This is a 30-day, 500-mile pilgrimage that begins in Southern France and ends in Santiago De Compostela in Northwestern Spain. Since this is a 30-day trip, I’m waiting until I’m eligible for 5 weeks of vacation. Hopefully,  I’ll still be able to do the walk by then.

Who inspires you?

My co-workers and my team. Their success inspires me.

What are you currently watching on Netflix/Some other streaming service?

Squid Games, Yellowstone, and re-watching the Sopranos

What is the first concert you attended?

Rick Springfield in 1982

What is your personal philosophy and how has it guided you?

My philosophy on life is that you should live while you’re alive and you should give others that same privilege. We shouldn't judge people for the choices they make, because we all have made bad decisions. You should do what you want with your life, as long as it makes you happy and causes no harm to others.

What is the one thing, you can’t live without?

Food and water.. duh

What is your favorite part of working at Standard Electric?

Freedom and independence. It’s like no other company I’ve ever worked for. My time here has really never had the stigma of “work”.  I love what I do.  I don’t think I’ve ever had one day in 10+ years where I dreaded coming into work. I enjoy completing a project, working on process improvements, and building solid partnerships with our customers. I do have a background in customer service which has really helped me live Larry’s “ Day one mentality and Fanatical Customer service”.  I have a great boss who gives me the tools that I need to do the job and the independence to make decisions. Plus, I don’t have to punch a time clock and oh yeah, the free food.

What’s something most people don’t know about you?

I‘m from a family of 12. I have 7 brothers and 4 sisters. My great grandparents came from Ireland in the late 1800s and landed in Chicago. Most of my older brothers and sisters grew up on the Southside of Chicago. My dad fought in WW2 and was a Chicago Fireman for many years before becoming an Engineer. When I was born, my family had moved from the city to the burbs and I grew up in Crystal Lake, IL.

If you won the lottery, what is the first thing you would do?

Throw out the alarm clock!

If you could meet anyone, living or dead, who would you meet? Why?

Probably my Grandfathers, who had passed before I was born. I would have liked to have known their stories and wisdom.
