Standard Electric Supply Co. was founded in 1919 as a manufacturer of electrical light fixtures and parts, with the goal of electrifying the City of Milwaukee one light at a time.
A lot has changed a century after we first opened. Four generations later we’re now a full-line electrical distributor, with a focus on industrial automation and control products for the OEM and MRO marketplace.
In the 1990s, our growing focus on automation led to the introduction of the Automated/OEM Products Group. Started in 1992, this group, now known as the Technical Solutions Team, added several engineers to the Standard Electric team, with the goal of helping determine the right solutions for our customers.
The first major expansion of Standard Electric’s technical team came with the opening of our sister company, Vision Control and Automation (VCA) in 1999. Located in Appleton, WI, VCA opened to specialize in vision systems. The team at VCA now includes six members of our Technical Solutions Team, including Mike Ubl, our Senior Director of the Technical Solutions Team who has been with Standard Electric since the early 1990s. The technical specialists at VCA include experts in automation, drives, cobots, and more.
As Standard Electric continued to grow in the early 2000s, our technical offering expanded with the introduction of our first Enclosure Modification facility in Sheboygan, WI in 2003. The enclosure modification team started with ability to assemble and modify enclosures, which included services like cut-outs, hand punches and painting. Our modification services expanded in 2014 when the Chicago Ridge, IL location opened and included our CNC Machining Center which allows us to modify enclosures faster than with manual modification. Our enclosure modification team now includes seven associates, including three members of the Technical Solutions Team who are available to help you design the right custom enclosure for your projects.
The second major expansion of our technical team came with the opening of our second sister company, SE Automation in 2004. Our focus with SE Automation is to sell and support the Siemens Industry line of automation products. The eight members of the SE Automation team, based out of our Eau Claire, WI and Appleton, WI locations, are expertly trained to support Siemen’s PLCs, HMIs, Networking, Motion, and Drive product families throughout Wisconsin.
In 2021, we announced that the Engineered Products Division would now be named the Technical Support Team. While the name may have changed, the faces and our dedication to fanatical customer service have not.
Over the past three decades, our Technical Solutions Team has grown to include over 30 technical specialists, with over 880 years of combined expertise. The team has a broad range of experience, and are extensively trained and cross-trained in:
