Glass fuses seal their element inside a clear tube, so a blown fuse can be identified at a glance without pulling it from the holder or putting a meter on it. Field techs pull them when equipment is dead and the fuse can be checked visually in seconds, when an intermittent fault needs a known-good fuse swapped in to rule it out, or when a control panel's spares drawer has run empty.
