Servo motors are built for precise control of position, velocity and torque, carrying feedback on the shaft so a drive can correct their movement continuously rather than run them open-loop. Indexing machines need one when a move has to repeat to a tolerance a plain motor cannot hold, when a failed motor has to be replaced with a matched winding and feedback, or when a new axis needs inertia and torque sized to the load.
