Power control transformers are dry-type step-down units built for the duty cycle of a control circuit, using low-impedance windings to hold secondary voltage steady through the inrush of a contactor coil pulling in. Panel builders size one when a panel's control voltage has to come down from its 240 or 480 volt supply, when a transformer has been dropping voltage far enough to drop out a coil, or when added devices have pushed a control circuit past its existing VA.
